چکیده

Risk of Recurrent Stroke The risk of stroke after a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mild ischemic stroke was 10% within 1 week and 18% within the first 3 months in Oxfordshire, UK, in 2002 to 2003.1 This substantial early risk is 3-fold higher if the TIA or ischemic stroke is caused by large artery disease and 5-fold lower if the cause is small artery disease.2 The prevalence and level of other causal vascular risk factors also influence risk of recurrence.3

Risk factors and treatment at recurrent stroke onset: results from the Recurrent Stroke Quality and Epidemiology (RESQUE) Study.

BACKGROUND Much effort has been made to study first-ever stroke patients. However, recurrent stroke has not been investigated as extensively. It is unclear which risk factors dominate, and whether adequate secondary prevention has been provided to patients who suffer from recurrent stroke. Also, the different types of recurrent stroke need further evaluation. METHODS The study included patien...

Blood pressure reduction in secondary stroke prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW : Risk factor modification plays an important role in recurrent stroke prevention. These modifiable risk factors tend to cluster in stroke patients, but for a significant subgroup the only identifiable risk factor is high blood pressure or chronic hypertension. This article reviews the current evidence for management of blood pressure in secondary stroke prevention. RECENT F...

Lacunar Stroke - Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Therapy for Secondary Prevention

Aim. To asses the therapeutic strategy for secondary prevention in lacunar stroke, according to the underlying mechanism of the cerebral infarct and to determine the recurrence rate of ischemic stroke in patients with lacunar infarct. Lacunar stroke is a small cerebral infarct in the territory of a single perforator artery. The mechanisms that underlie lacunar infarct are various: small vessel ...

The Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke

• Objective: To provide an overview of the evidence and clinical approach to secondary stroke prevention for patients following an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). • Methods: Overview of the literature. • Results: Patients with acute ischemic strokes and TIAs are at increased risk for secondary vascular events, including recurrent stroke. Nonmodifiable risk factors should be ...

Declining stroke and vascular event recurrence rates in secondary prevention trials over the past 50 years and consequences for current trial design.

BACKGROUND It is widely supposed, but not well-demonstrated, that cumulative advances in standard care have reduced recurrent stroke and cardiovascular events in secondary prevention trials. METHODS AND RESULTS Systematic search identified all randomized, controlled trials of medical secondary stroke prevention therapies published from 1960 to 2009. Randomized, controlled trials narrowly focu...

Stroke Prevention: Managing Modifiable Risk Factors

Prevention plays a crucial role in counteracting morbidity and mortality related to ischemic stroke. It has been estimated that 50% of stroke are preventable through control of modifiable risk factors and lifestyle changes. Antihypertensive treatment is recommended for both prevention of recurrent stroke and other vascular events. The use of antiplatelets and statins has been shown to reduce th...
